How to study without your phone winning every session
September 25, 2026 · 5 min read
Studying without your phone is not about hating technology. It is about stopping your phone from being the fastest source of relief every time work gets hard.
Set up before you sit down
Decide where your phone lives during the session. Another room is ideal. If it must stay nearby, Airplane Mode is the simplest honest signal: I am not available on the old channels right now.
Tell the people who matter through one link, not five separate chats. Farlands gives you a mission page where they can leave a note and wait for your signal.
Add friction to the reflex check
Most phone checks take under five seconds and give a tiny dopamine hit. Your job is to make that hit harder to get than staying on task.
Delayed messages help. If a reply cannot arrive instantly, opening your phone during a problem set stops feeling worth it.
Match your distance to the work
Short review session? Pick a closer planet. Four-hour deep work? Go farther out. The planet you choose in Farlands sets how long before messages reach you.
That gap is not a bug. It is the whole point.
Check in on purpose, not on autopilot
Plan one or two check-in windows instead of constant monitoring. A quick voice log to your page can reassure people without reopening every app on your phone.
When you slip, restart the mission
You opened Twitter anyway. It happens. Do not moralize. Close the app, reset your console, and treat the next block as a new launch. Ritual beats guilt.
Start your mission
Open your console, pick a planet, and lock in for your next study or deep work block.
