Terms of Service

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of Farlands ("Farlands", "we", "us", or "our"), including the landing page, astronaut console at /console, mission pages at /{username}, and related features. By using Farlands, you agree to these Terms. Last updated: October 4, 2026.

The service

Farlands helps people stay focused by framing work as a mission and letting trusted contacts reach them on a delayed schedule. Astronauts operate a console, choose a simulated planet distance, and share a personal mission page. Visitors and mission members use that page to send messages, listen to logs, view snapshots or video when permitted, and trigger SOS alerts.

Planet delay is a product mechanic, not a measurement of real astronomical distance. Except for SOS and SOS acknowledgments, messages and media arrive after the delay associated with the selected planet at send time.

Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old to use Farlands. If you are under the age of majority where you live, you may use the service only with permission from a parent or legal guardian who accepts these Terms on your behalf.

Accounts and roles

Farlands has two primary roles. Astronauts create and operate mission consoles. Visitors join and use an astronaut's mission page.

  • Astronaut accounts sign in with Google or email and password, claim a username, and configure mission settings.
  • Visitors on public pages may browse with an anonymous session. Sending chat messages or upgrading membership requires linking that session to Google or email so the account is no longer anonymous.
  • Private mission pages require a room code. You are responsible for keeping room codes confidential and sharing them only with people you trust.
  • You are responsible for activity that occurs under your account and for maintaining the security of your sign-in credentials.

Acceptable use

You agree not to misuse Farlands. Prohibited conduct includes:

  • Harassing, threatening, impersonating, or abusing other users.
  • Uploading unlawful, infringing, exploitative, or malicious content.
  • Attempting to bypass delay rules, room-code protections, audience restrictions, premium limits, or rate limits.
  • Reverse engineering, scraping, or interfering with the service or its security controls.
  • Using SOS except for genuinely urgent situations, or sending repeated or fraudulent SOS signals.
  • Using Farlands for emergency services. Farlands is not a substitute for calling local emergency responders.

Your content

You retain ownership of content you submit, including messages, logs, snapshots, notes, and profile information. You grant Farlands a limited license to host, store, reproduce, transmit, and display that content only as needed to operate the service, enforce delay and audience rules, and comply with law.

You represent that you have the rights needed to submit your content and that doing so does not violate these Terms or anyone else's rights.

We may remove content or suspend access if we reasonably believe it violates these Terms, creates risk, or is required by law.

Privacy controls and sharing

Astronauts choose whether a mission page is public or protected by room code. Astronauts also choose log audiences and whether snapshots are enabled.

When you join or visit a mission page, you understand that the astronaut and authorized mission members may see content you send and content shared with them according to the astronaut's settings.

Premium features and billing

Mission features are free. Premium adds longer voice logs and daily video logs for $6 per month when billing is available. Premium attaches to the astronaut account; visitors do not pay to view content.

At times, premium checkout may be unavailable and Farlands may collect interest requests instead of charging payment. When paid billing launches, additional payment terms will apply and we will present them before you are charged.

Unless required by law or stated otherwise at purchase, premium fees are non-refundable once a billing period begins. See our Refund Policy at /refunds for full details.

SOS and safety disclaimer

SOS is an in-product alert intended to reach an astronaut's open console tab quickly. It depends on the astronaut keeping the console page open and the device awake. SOS does not contact emergency services, phone carriers, or offline devices.

Do not rely on Farlands for medical, police, fire, or other emergency response. Call your local emergency number when immediate help is required.

Device permissions

Some features require browser permissions for camera and/or microphone access. You may decline permissions, but the related feature will not work. Snapshots are taken only while the feature is enabled and the browser stream is active.

Third-party services

Farlands uses third-party infrastructure such as Google Firebase and, when enabled, Google sign-in. Your use of those services may also be subject to their terms and policies. We are not responsible for third-party services outside our control.

Suspension and termination

You may stop using Farlands at any time. We may suspend or terminate access if you violate these Terms, create risk for other users, or where required to protect the service.

Sections that by nature should survive termination, including disclaimers and limitations of liability, will continue to apply.

Disclaimers

Farlands is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not guarantee uninterrupted, secure, or error-free operation, or that the service will meet your expectations.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Farlands and its operators will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for loss of profits, data, goodwill, or other intangible losses, arising from your use of the service.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, our total liability for any claim arising out of or relating to the service will not exceed the greater of the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim or USD $100.

Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. If changes are material, we will provide reasonable notice, such as by updating the date on this page. Continued use after the effective date of revised Terms means you accept the changes.
